God of War Games Tier List: God of War games have changed a lot since the first one came out in 2005. It’s still one of Sony’s most reliable single-player series and sometimes a PlayStation mascot. It’s one of the most famous hack-and-slash series in gaming.
God of War has been a fun fighting game for almost twenty years, based on Greek and Norse mythology and telling the sad story of an antihero. Now things look better for Kratos and his son Atreus, but they had to face many dangers and deaths along the way.
When it comes to quality, God of War has lived up to the high standards expected of a PlayStation IP. Actually, there are only nine full God of War games, and all of them are pretty good action games. The main thing that sets them apart is how their strengths and flaws stack up against their peers. Luckily, most of them are still fun to play for some reason.
S Tier
God of War 2: There is an old video game that says every game should have one follow-up that is the same but better. Action game fans still think that God of War 2 is the best game in the series and that it is the perfect follow-up.
Because it has the right amount of fighting, puzzle-solving, moving around, and Greek drama, God of War 2 will keep getting older PlayStation fans to play it again on an older system.
God of War Ragnarok—The same saying about video games applies to God of War Ragnarok, the fourth game in the series. Ragnarok builds on the story and gameplay of the 2018 game and, after only two games, manages the amazing feat of ending the Norse saga in a satisfying way.
One thing that makes God of War Ragnarok a bit old is that it fixes all the problems that people had with the last game and is now one of the best first-party games on the PlayStation 5.
A Tier
God of War 3: Many fans rank God of War 3 lower than God of War 2 because of small differences in the story and gameplay, but the game is still a classic. The show in God of War 3 was so much better than in the previous games that even God of War Ragnarok might not have as many huge set pieces in its whole runtime.
Some players think these take away from God of War 3’s fighting and story, and others think they put too much emphasis on quick-time events. But that’s a small price to pay for the most epic final battle between Kratos and the Olympian gods.
God of War (2018) – Fans were initially apprehensive about God of War’s soft revival in 2018, with concerns ranging from its pivot to RPG systems to its new camera angle to how the story would continue from the conclusion of God of War 3.
In spite of all that, God of War (2018) was a huge hit, and fans loved the Norse setting and characters right away. Not having a lot of different enemies slowed down the game’s best side quests, but God of War (2018) showed that God of War could look different ways.
B Tier
God of War (2005) – The first God of War game came out in 2005 and set a high standard for all the games that came after it. The story of Kratos wanting revenge for his family even though he killed them and the combat all got off to a good start.
Problems with the pace are the only thing that makes God of War 1 bad. It’s not the sequels, so it can’t gain from their improvements and changes. It should be fun to play God of War again as long as you know what was going on in 2005.
God of War: Ghost of Sparta—Most spin-offs of the God of War series couldn’t live up to the originals, but God of War: Ghost of Sparta, the second PSP game in the series, stood out. Ghost of Sparta is best known for adding important new parts to God of War’s story, as well as making Chains of Olympus’ gameplay better.
This short but sweet game is worth looking at for fans who want to learn more about Kratos’s past. It’s the only time his brother Deimos shows up.
C Tier
God of War: Chains of Olympus—The first PSP game, Chains of Olympus, isn’t as good. The game looks and plays like the original God of War, but there are too many block-pushing problems in its already short run time for a God of War. With its simple story, God of War: Chains of Olympus isn’t much more than a lead-in to Ghost of Sparta.
God of War: Ascension—Players may not have had high hopes for the portable God of War games, but God of War: Ascension, which came out after God of War 3 on consoles, showed them wrong. Ascension is the first game in the God of War series, but it doesn’t add anything to the story.
The gameplay was also controversial, with a lot of changes that made fans unhappy and a camera that wasn’t stable enough to see the fight when it happened. God of War: Ascension isn’t a bad game, and the online mode had some cool ideas, but it doesn’t stand out in a series with so many great games.
God of War: Betrayal—This side-scrolling phone beat-em-up is, unfortunately, a thing of the past. It was one of the most interesting things about God of War.
Even though this game isn’t as good as the fully 3D God of War games, it’s still pretty good for a mobile Java game and feels like a real God of War experience. It will be hard to find, but some die-hard fans may still be able to enjoy what makes God of War: Betrayal special.
